Used Wood Lathe For Sale? Is it a Bargain Or a Bust?

!±8± Used Wood Lathe For Sale? Is it a Bargain Or a Bust?

So you have seen an add for a used wood lathe and you are on your way to see it. Will you find a bargain or a bust? What should you look for before parting with your hard earned cash?

Wood lathes are very basic woodworking machines. They have a set of ways on which the rest of the lathe is built. These are usually reinforced angle iron set exactly parallel to one another. Make sure they are:

1. Flat. Use a straight edge to ensure that the surfaces are flat and sight along them with winding sticks to make sure they are coplanar.

2. Clean. A little rust is OK and minor amounts of finish on them is to be expected. These are easily cleaned with a little fine wet and dry sandpaper and is general maintenance. However, a bit of heavy paint can cover a hard to fix ding or a place where rust was able to cause serious corrosion.

Most wood lathes have the tail stock on the right and the headstock on the left. The tail stock holds the tail center for spindle turning and may be used to hold other items such as a Jacob's chuck from time to time. Make sure:

1. It moves easily along the ways and locks down securely when fastened. This will happen with a bolt that connects to a plate below the ways and may be secured with a handle or a wrench. Once fastened down you should not be able to grab it and move it.

2. It does not wobble in the ways. They are parallel and the tail stock needs to be kept parallel within them. A few tail stocks have adjustments to correct them but not all.

3. The Morse taper is clean and in good shape.

4. It lines up with the headstock. Put a center in both and make sure the points are in the same plane vertically and horizontally. If not and there is no adjustments available, walk away. This is no bargain.

The tool rest and banjo between the tail stock and head stock need to move easily along the ways and be sturdy. They are easily maintained and corrected for minor dings and hits.

The headstock is the heart of the lathe. It is also the part that can be fixed most thoroughly. Belts and bearings are usually inexpensive and reasonable to replace. Make sure:

1. The motor works well.
2. It is secure to the ways.
3. If it rotates it has to lock down well.
4. The Morse taper is clean and in good shape.
5. It lines up with the tail stock. If it does not, walk away.

There are a lot of good bargains in used lathes and more come up as wood turners upgrade to larger tools. Looking for a few minor things can allow for the bargains to keep from being busts.

Dewalt Chop Saws For Sale

!±8± Dewalt Chop Saws For Sale

If you are looking for Dewalt Chop saws for sale then you know that your local high street will not have them in stock. You also know that you will not find any special deals for Dewalt Chop in your local hardware store. Their business is about supplying stockable items such as hand tools and accessories. They will also stock the raw materials for building and making whatever you are working on at the time.

Buying Dewalt Chop Saws Online Has Its Advantages

If however you are in the market for a Dewalt Chop saw then you will need to look online. This has a number of advantages over the traditional method of buying. The first one is that it will be delivered to your door. Most Dewalt saws like the DW718 are hefty pieces of machinery. So home delivery will save you job of carrying it to your truck and then unloiading it at home.

The second advantage of looking for Dewalt Chop Saws for sale online is that it is always in stock. Online retails use large central warehouses which means that most items are in stock most of the time. You can also check stock when you order to avoid being disappointed. The third advantage is that you know for sure that the actual saw you receive will be brand spanking new. It will not be a demonstrator model. It also will not have been gathering dust in a workshop waiting to be sold.

The Trend Towards Buying Power Tools Online

There has been a change in how people buy things over the last 5 years. There are still some concerns about credit card security and fraud. These concerns have not stopped the huge trend to buying major purchases online. We no longer just buy books and music online. Most people are making large item purchases such as Dewalt Chop Saws and other power tools on the internet.

To this end there are now quite few power tool websites that aim to serve this growing market. Who would have thought that hammers, screwdrivers, drills and saws would be sold over the internet? In my opinion the service is better and the guarantees are solid. The Dewalt Chop saw range is a quality product anyway so there is little that can go wrong anyway.

Cutting Hand Tools

!±8± Cutting Hand Tools

Cutting hand tools are a common requirement in home improvement projects. Many simple hand tools cut wood and other materials by using physical force for undertaking such tasks. A handsaw is the most frequently used tool for cutting wood, There are different kinds of handsaws to be used depending on type of job.

Ripsaws, big solid hand saws with teeth are designed to cut along the grain of wood. While crosscut saws have teeth designed to make cuts perpendicular to the grain of the wood while maintaining a clean cut. Bow saws have long thin blades connected by bowed metal frames allowing it to cut through. Coping saws are small and used for detailed wood.

Axes used for splitting wood are used as an alternative to chainsaws for felling trees or chopping firewood. They come in many different shapes and sizes. Some axes have only one blade, while others have blades on both sides. Small hand axes are called hatchets. A maul may also be used to chop wood and having a broader and heavier head with a sharp edge makes for a nice tool.

Hedge trimmers are a type of hand tool used to cut small branches. Looking like large pliers with two long handles they are useful for pieces of wood that can fit within their jaws. Chisels are sharp metal tools used along with a hammer to cut, split or shave wood. A chisel is basically a metal wedge that can be driven powerfully by using a hammer.

Modern cutting hand tools make it possible to cut through stone and tile. It may not be your everyday project and would require some amount of expertise. Drills, hammers and cutting tools make it quite daunting. A set of stone and tile cutting tools include coring and hammer drills, grinders, and a variety of saws.

Most wood tools have at least one bevel. This is the sloping surface coming off the edge. But it's more than just a sloping surface. It's actually a cutting angle. With the bevel supporting a specific angle, it determines how the tool can be used. Experienced people know about bevels and how they affect cutting efficiency.

The angle of your carving tool or length of the bevel determines the strength of the wood you cut. The greater the cutting angle the steeper and shorter the bevel. If you're going to cut soft woods, you'll want a small angle on your tool's edge. If you're going to cut hard woods, you'll want a large cutting angle on your tool's edge.

An important point to remember is the size of the cutting angle on the edge that determines how much control you'll have when cutting. When you know the fundamentals of how angles on beveled edges affect cutting efficiency you will learn all about any cutting tool you hold in your hand. You will thus avoid simple mistakes and become a skilled cutting tool user.

What Does FSC Certified Wood Mean?

!±8± What Does FSC Certified Wood Mean?

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international, non-governmental charity, formed in 1993 to promote responsible management of all of the Earth's forests. Different countries have branches of the organisation operating in them.

The big benefit of the FSC is that forests are protected for future generations and people know that when buying wood that is FSC certified, they are not contributing to deforestation and global warming.

Deforestation is a huge problem for the planet. If forests are not properly managed, we could end up losing an irreplaceable and vital part of the world's ecosystem.

Illegal logging is one part of the problem. People desperate for money chop down virgin forest and clear trees faster than they can be replaced. No regard is given to local wildlife or indigenous peoples that depend on the forest for all of their needs. Unfortunately some of this timber will find its way into the UK where end users are sometimes oblivious as to where the wood has come from.

People can trust the FSC labelling of wood. The certification relates to forest management and chain of custody. A well-managed forest will be managed with consideration for wildlife, people and the environment and trees that have been cut down will be replaced naturally or replanted. Sections of the forest will be protected from logging to protect the rare plants and animals that are part of it and to protect sacred sites of indigenous people. Workers will be sourced locally, trained properly and paid fairly.

The chain of custody tracks the movement of the wood from forest to end supplier. Every link in the process is tracked and certified to make sure that everyone is compliant with the FSC's principles.

Consumers can see the FSC logo (a tree with a tick) on anything from wooden furniture, paper and oak flooring to charcoal and venison.

Dewalt 716 Miter Saw Review

!±8± Dewalt 716 Miter Saw Review

The Dewalt 716 is one of the range of miter chop saws manufactured by Dewalt. It is very confusing to see all the model numbers in a catalogue. It is hard to work out exactly what each model is for and how it differs from the other models.

An Overview of Miter Chop Saws Types

The is a progression in the range that starts with your basic Dewalt chop saw. This model is the cheapest one and just does straight cuts in wood. To use it with aluminium or wood laminates you need to have the specific Dewalt saw blade for that use. There is no opportunity to make angled cuts or cuts to large pieces of wood. The blade and motor unit is fixed in place.

The next model is where your motor and blade unit is fixed but you can angle the cut. The range is just over 90 degrees in adjustment. This is where the Dewalt 716 sits in the range. You can make accurate 45 degree cuts in either orientation. There is also a staged indent system for certain common angles such as 30 degrees. So you can in a few seconds select one of these set angles to cut.

The next type is where the angle is fixed but the motor and blade slides forward. This enables you to cut wide wood pieces. Very few people use this type because you might as well go for the top of the range. The top of the range model is the Dewalt 718 which is a compound sliding miter saw. This cuts at angles through 2 planes and is a terrific piece of kit if you need the features it provides.

How To Use The Dewalt 716 Chop Saw

The main use for this particular saw is to cut down long pieces of wood into correct lengths. You maximum size for cutting will be around 150mm by 50mm. (6" X 2") Pieces bigger than this are not easy to cut. If you are working on a real wood floor then you can cut the planks easily and accurately with this. This is probably the job that the DW716b is used for. It is portable enough to carry to your working site but accurate enough to do a great cut. The cut is very clean. The blades will last for years if you use the right blade for each job. You shouldn't use a wood blade to cut laminate flooring. You can get a dedicated blade for cutting laminated wood.

The second use is for cutting very accurate 45 degree cuts. You can dial up any angle but in practice it is the 45 degree setting that you will use. I have had 3 of these over the last 22 years and they work very hard. The Dewalt range is designed for heavy use and the Dewalt 716 is part of that standard. Cheaper models such as the evolution range will do a job but will make the job longer. They are not so easy to use.
